The New Bullfrog M2 Turns Expensive Drone Threats Into $10 Taxpayer Wins

by Ward Clark, Redstate.com, April 8, 2026

Once in a while, in the ever-changing face of modern, high-tech warfare, the taxpayers get a bargain. In this case, that bargain is based on some relatively low-tech, and we shouldn't be surprised to learn that the basis for this bargain is a brainchild of the Maestro, John Moses Browning. The new Bullfrog M2 is made to kill drones, quickly and efficiently, and instead of launching expensive interceptors, the Bullfrog launches .50 caliber bullets costing about $10 a pop.

That's a good deal by any measure! (Watch the Video above!)

The Bullfrog's maker, the Austin, Texas-based Allen Control Systems, describes it thusly:

Bullfrog™ is a lightweight, low-power autonomous weapon station designed to detect, identify, and neutralize enemy Uxs. Engineered for mobility and versatility, Bullfrog™ excels in both on-the-move operations and the protection of high-value targets like power substations. Capable of engaging Class 1-3 UAVs, it offers both autonomous and semi-autonomous modes, delivering flexible, reliable defense at every turn.

Allen Control Systems lists four virtues of the Bullfrog, namely, that it is precise, passive, lightweight, and scalable.

There are other variations on the Bullfrog, including ones that use the 7.62x51mm NATO round in the M240 machine gun and the M134 rotary 7.62x51mm rotary gun. They also make a variant based on the M230 30mm light cannon. That's a lot of low-tech bang for our bucks.

Now, this system has limitations. From what we see in the video, it appears to be a line-of-sight weapon. The range is limited to a couple of thousand yards, at the most. The M2 has an effective range of about 1,800 yards. The 30mm cannon version may beat that by a little, but not too much. And, that's fine.

First of all, that's why it's good to have layered defenses. Second, unlike ballistic missiles, drones are typically not that fast; they aren't dropping on you at Mach 5, but motoring along comparatively sedately at well under Mach 1.

The video above shows the Bullfrog system engaging multiple targets with aplomb - and often with only one round fired. Also, one problem we've been facing in Iran is addressed by this, that being the disproportionate costs; we've been using multi-million dollar interceptors to destroy multi-hundred dollar drones. Now the drones can be taken out with one or two $10 bullets.

Never underestimate American ingenuity.

The primary counter, of course, to a system like this is simple, and I'm not giving anything away by naming it: Launch more drones. Bury the Bullfrog in more targets than it can engage. The counter to that is also obvious: Install more Bullfrogs.

These would, I should think, be remarkably useful in protecting set targets like headquarters installations, logistic dumps, bridges, and so forth; one could install more Bullfrogs in accordance with the importance of the installation.

For vital things like, say, protecting the troop's beer stocks, you're probably going to want thirty or forty of these units.

As for John Moses Browning, now, that guy just continues to amaze. Right off the top of my head, I can think of three weapons he designed that are still in U.S. and NATO military stocks: The M2 .50 caliber machine gun (adopted 1933), the M1911 Colt-Browning pistol (adopted 1911), and the Browning Hi-Power 9mm automatic pistol (first in use in 1935). Now the Da Vinci of guns' heavy machine gun is being put in a high-tech shell to kill drones.

That's how you can spot the products of a real genius.
